III. Sermon Review: “Fortified for The End” (Pastor Brian Cassell) Pastor Brian Cassell’s sermon, titled “Fortified for The End,” continues a series on Revelation 14 and the three angels’ messages. A. The Importance of a Strong Foundation Jesus as the Foundation: The children’s story powerfully illustrated the concept of building one’s life on Jesus as a strong, unshakeable foundation. Listening to Him, praying, being kind, reading the Bible, and having worship are highlighted as ways to strengthen this foundation. Matthew 7:25 Quote: “The rain came down the streams rose and the winds blew and beat against the house yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock.” This verse emphasizes the resilience of a life built on Christ, particularly in the face of life’s difficulties (“life is kind of can get really yucky the world is kind of really yucky”). Contrast with Self-Reliance: Attempting to build a foundation on oneself will lead to crumbling. B. Review of the First Angel’s Message (Revelation 14:6-7) Everlasting Gospel: The first angel proclaims the “eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth to every nation tribe language and people.” It is a “universal message,” the “good news of Jesus salvation by grace through faith.” Living out the Gospel: The gospel is not just a concept but is “lived out by God’s people as a response to our thankfulness and and gratitude for his salvation.” This leads to a life of worship, honoring God, and giving Him glory. Judgment Hour and Creator Worship: The sermon reiterates that “the hour of his judgment… has come” (since 1844) and that we are to “Worship him who made the heavens the earth the sea and the springs of water,” linking this to the fourth commandment and the worship of God as both Redeemer and Creator. Urgency of the End Times: “We are now living in the final chapter of Earth’s history.” C. The Second Angel’s Message and the Fall of Babylon (Revelation 14:8) Proclamation: “And another angel followed saying Babylon is fallen. Is fallen that great city because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” Symbolic Nature of Babylon: Babylon is symbolic, as the ancient city is in ruins. It represents a “system” in opposition to God. Two Endgame Players: The presence of God and Babylon indicates “two endgame players” – “God’s system and then there is another system which is Babylon,” diametrically opposed. Universal Coercion and Religio-Political Power: Babylon “exerts a universal power of coercion” and is a “significant superpower in the divine endgame a religio-political power which has the ability both religiously and then politically to enforce something upon the earth.” Fall Before Christ’s Return: Babylon “falls or collapses just before the return of Christ.” Its fall is “good news for some people on earth.” Opposition to the Gospel: This system is “in direct opposition to the first angel to the gospel.” While the gospel is eternal, Babylon “shall fall it shall crumble and if we decide to identify with it we shall crumble with it.” Origin of Babylon (Genesis 10-11):Nimrod: The founder of Babylon, whose name “Morad in Hebrew means to rebel literally.” He was the “author of imperialism,” conquering nations and establishing the first monarchy, transforming society from patriarchal to king-led. Tower of Babel: Built out of “doubt of God’s word” (fearing another flood) and disobedience to God’s command to spread across the earth. It was humankind’s “attempt to reach heaven by our own efforts,” representing “salvation through works.” Meaning of Babel: “Babel means to confuse.” This system is “deeply confused.” Lucifer as the Invisible King of Babylon (Isaiah 14):The prophecy against the king of Babylon transitions to “Oh how you are fallen… oh Lucifer son of the morning.” Lucifer’s sin was “I will ascend into heaven… I will exalt my throne… I will be like the most high.” This language mirrors the ambition of the Tower of Babel. Satan is “the invisible king of Babylon,” influencing this system throughout history. Babylon is a “storefront for Satan’s kingdom here on earth.” Characteristics of Babylon:Symbol of a superpower, religio-political power with Satan’s backing. Exerts universal dominion through “coercion, through force, through persecution.” Rebels against God, rules over people, resorts to force, defiant against God’s will and word. Sows confusion (on salvation, worship, creation). A “puppet front for Lucifer’s rule on earth.” Religious power with “ambition to be God.” Enemy of God’s people, to be destroyed by God. Historical Context – Martin Luther: Martin Luther and other reformers identified the “medieval church” as “identical with the kingdom of Babylon” due to its laws, traditions, and opposition to the biblical truth of “salvation by grace.” Personal Application – “Babylon in Our Hearts”: The sermon emphasizes that Babylon is not just an external entity but can manifest as “the spirit of Babylon… pride arrogance rebellion distrust self- worship even through trying to earn God’s favor thinking somehow we can do it ourselves.” This spirit can lead to oppressing “those closest to us.” Contrast: Jesus’ Humility: Unlike Babylon’s “up up up” ambition, Jesus “moves down from heaven… born into poverty… obedient even unto death down,” yet “ascends to the very right hand of the father.” The way to up is down. Gospel’s Eternal Nature: “Babylon will fall… but the gospel of Jesus lives forever because Jesus lives forever.” D. Call to Action Fortify with Bible Truths: “None but those who have fortified the mind with the truths of the Bible will stand through the last great conflict.” Bible and Bible Only (Sola Scriptura): God will have a people who “maintain the Bible and the Bible only as the standard of all doctrines… the foundation of all of our faith in Jesus.” Keep God’s Commandments by Faith: Revelation 14:12 describes God’s people who “keep the commandments of God… because they have been saved by the faith of Jesus.” Stand with Jesus: The concluding call is to “simply stand with Jesus” and “say no to self in the system that one day will fall.” IV.
