An Overview On

The SDA Church

We are Christians who are members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. “Seventh-day”, because we observe the Sabbath on Saturday as instructed by Christ. “Adventists”, because we wait for the second coming of Christ, the advent. Both the old and new testaments of The Bible provide the basis for our beliefs. We take great joy in living according to Christ’s example of sacrifice and humility.

We are a Christ-centered worldwide religious community dedicated to serving God, sharing the gospel and helping others

Sabbath

We follow Biblical teachings regarding the Sabbath. That is why we observe this holy day on Saturday, the seventh day of the week (Gen. 2:3, Ex. 20:8-10).
Following scripture, we observe the Sabbath from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. We consider it a day of rest and no unnecessary work is done. The day is devoted to Bible study, church services, family activities, and Christian witnessing.

SDA History

Early 1800’s: Interest in the second coming of Christ spread through most of the Christian world. William Miller, a prominent religious leader calculated a date for Christ’s return (October 22, 1844). A great disappointment resulted when that day passed without event. Some Adventists believed that the set date was correct but that the wrong event had been predicted. In their view, the date being the second phase of Christ’s priestly ministry in heaven, in preparation for His second coming.

1844 – 1863: From this group arose several leaders who built the foundation of Seventh-day Adventism. Joseph Bates and James and Ellen White traveled throughout New England conducting Bible classes, organizing prayer groups and formulating unifying doctrine. Mrs. White contributed many influential writings. Distinct beliefs and practices that emerged during this period include: observance of the seventh-day Sabbath, respect for the human body and healthy living habits, belief in the importance of evangelism.

1863: Our church membership grew, prompting formal organization in 1863. Church headquarters were located in Battle Creek, MI. As Adventists shared their faith in Christ, Church membership grew steadily. In 1900, there were more than 75,000 members; in 1955, more than a million. In 2004 there were more than 13 million members worldwide.

Fundamental Beliefs

Jesus Christ as revealed to us in the Bible is at the very center of our beliefs. He was of a virgin birth and was an incarnation among humans. He lived a sinless life – a symbol of victory over temptation. His death on the cross was an atonement for our sins and his resurrection and ascension into heaven promised eternal life. His soon return was promised, as fulfillment of Bible prophecy. We believe Christ’s return will be a great and glorious event for the righteous, both living and dead, who enter into heaven. We also believe that the unrighteous will die in eternal separation from God (rather than burn for eternity). We find great joy in leading active Christian lives, confident in Jesus’ love for the human race and the promise of eternal life for those who love and obey God.
